MONACO- Man City are out of the Champions League after being eliminated by Monaco tonight as the French side progress on away goals in a 6-6 aggregate cup tie.
Man City won the first leg 5-3 in Manchester and played against a side tonight without leading scorer Radamel Falcao who scored twice in the first leg between the two sides.
Monaco got off to a great start when they took the lead in the 8th minute. Bernardo Silva’s cross was met by Kylian Mbappe who tucked it home, getting his second goal in the cup tie.
The home side kept piling on the pressure looking for a second goal which could potentially see them progress. Man City could barely get out of their own half as a second goal looked likely.
Monaco eventually got their second goal, almost a mirror image of the first one but this time Mendy’s cross found Fabinho who smashed the ball into the back of the net.
The hosts now led 2-0 on the night and made it 5-5 on aggregate but would progress through the away goals rule.
Man City started the second half off much better, showing lots of pressure and had a good chance through Aguero.
The chances kept piling up for City when Aguero had two more clear efforts on goal followed by a chance from Leroy Sane.
Veteran defender Andrea Raggi was replaced by the teenager Almamy Toure after the Italian came off with an injury.
Minutes after Raggi was taken off, City took the lead in the tie when Subasic parried Sterling’s shot right to Leroy Sane who’s shot rifled into the top of the net. City now led 6-5 on aggregate.
If you wanted another goal in this extraordinary cup-tie, then you weren’t disappointed. Bakayoko header home Lemar’s cross minutes after City scored to make it 3-1 for Monaco and 6-6 on aggregate. Once again the away goals were in Monaco’s favour.
City battled hard until the end but Monaco’s defence was very strong until the final whistle. Monaco upset the English side after Pep’s side came into the game with a 5-3 lead.
For the first time in his managerial career, Pep Guardiola has been knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16.
After last season’s semi-final run, City fans won’t be too impressed with the Spanish coach’s debut season in Manchester.
The quarter-final draw will take place THIS Friday at 6:00am EST.
