MANCHESTER- Juan Mata’s goal was enough to send Manchester United into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League after beating FC Rostov 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Last week the game in Russia finished 1-1. Going into tonight’s game United had the advantage from Mkhitaryan’s away goal.
Manchester United dominated the opening exchanges of the game, Rojo had a good header saved by the Rostov goalie to deny the opening goal.
United kept attacking, Mkhitaryan and Pogba had good chances whilst Ibrahimovic hit the post. The host’s were getting closer and closer.
Despite all the chances, the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
The second half didn’t start off well for United. Paul Pogba came off with a suspected hamstring injury, then minutes afterwards Daley Blind came off with a head injury.
Rostov grew into the game as the half went on. Noboa and Azmoun had good chances within the same minute which saw Sergio Romero forced to make some good saves.
Manchester United could breathe a sigh of relief when Ibrahimovic flicked on Valencia’s cross to the back post where Juan Mata was unmarked to make it 1-0 for the Red Devils. United now led 2-1 on aggregate.
Rostov needed one goal to take the game to extra-time. Noboa’s last minute free-kick was beautifully saved by Romero, who had an outstanding performance.
United squeezed past Rostov to book their spot in the Europa League quarter-finals.
The draw will take place tomorrow at 7:00am EST.
