Canada names youthful squad for send-off game against Mexico

Canada Soccer selected a squad of 22 players to face Mexico in the send-off game before heading out to the World Cup next month.

The Reds will meet Mexico at BMO Field in Toronto next weekend, their final game before heading to France for the World Cup.

Kenneth Heines-Møller named 13 players who have yet to feature at a World Cup, with an average age of 24.

Teenagers Julia Grosso, Jayde Riviere, Jordyn Huitema, and for the first time, 16-year-old Jade Rose will be in the squad next weekend.

Christine Sinclair is set to feature in her fifth World Cup at the age of 35 as she comes into the Mexico game with 180 goals in 280 caps.

The 23-player squad for the World Cup will be released close to the end of the month, after the game next weekend.

Their first game of the tournament will be on June 10 in Montpellier against Cameroon, before they meet New Zealand and Netherlands later on.

Kickoff between Canada and Mexico is set for 1 p.m. EDT at BMO Field on Sat. May 18.

Defenders (8): Allysha Chapman, Shelina Zadorsky, Rebecca Quinn, Ashley Lawrence, Jayde Riviere, Lindsay Agnew, Jade Rose, Vanessa Gilles.

Midfielders (5): Jessie Fleming, Desiree Scott, Sophie Schmidt, Diana Matheson, Julia Grosso.

Forwards (7): Christine Sinclair, Jordyn Huitema, Deanne Rose, Janine Beckie, Nichelle Prince, Adriana Leon, Gabrielle Carle.
