John Herdman releases 23-man squad for 2019 Gold Cup

Canada head coach John Herdman released his 23-man squad for the 2019 Gold Cup on Thursday ahead of June’s tournament.

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies headlines the squad which has an average age of 25, while Atiba Hutchinson will make his sixth Gold Cup appearance.

Milan Borjan, Jonathan Osorio, Samuel Piette, and Russell Teibert will all make their fourth appearance at the tournament.

Newcomers Kamal Miller, Noble Okello, Zachary Brault-Guillard, Marcus Godinho, Jonathan David, Liam Millar, and Derek Cornelius will be in the squad for the first time.

Okello comes into the squad after playing for Toronto FC II in the USL this season as a surprise addition to the team.

Herdman named 12 MLS players to the team with four from Vancouver, three from Toronto FC, and two from Montreal.

Tesho Akindele, Raheem Edwards, Ballou Tabla, Anthony Jackson-Hamel, Tosaint Ricketts, and Dejan Jakovic were the players who missed out from the preliminary squad while defender Adam Straith will attend the pre-tournament camp in Los Angeles as a 24th player.

Canada will begin their tournament on June 15 in Pasadena against Martinique before the face Mexico and Cuba.

Midfielders: Scott Arfield (Rangers), Atiba Hutchinson (Besiktas), Will Johnson (Orlando City), Noble Okello (Toronto FC), Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC), Samuel Piette (Montreal Impact), Mark-Anthony Kaye (LAFC), Russell Teibert (Vancouver Whitecaps).

Forwards: Lucas Cavallini (Puebla FC), Jonathan David (Gent), Cyle Larin (Besiktas), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), David Junior Hoilett (Cardiff City), Liam Millar (Liverpool).
